Spelling Bees
May 31st, 2007 by lvbirders
This morning Josh and I were pitted against some of the best spellers in the world and we were not coming out on the winning end.
We sat fascinated, watching the Scripps National Spelling Bee. I had to leave after just a short bit but Josh continued on with his big sister joining him a little later. He was totally into the show even calling me when Samir Patel was eliminated. As fellow homeschoolers we were rooting for him. Josh said he was just so amazed when Patel misspelled his word, clevis, as this was one of the very few that Josh and his sister actually got correct.
Timing is everything as they say and I am grateful that I saw this post on Dawn’s blog as I just finished reading, Bee Season by Myla Goldberg and am in the middle of American Bee - The National Spelling Bee and the Culture of Word Nerds by James Maguire.
We are looking forward to seeing the final rounds tonight. The spelling bee holds a special place in my heart. As an eight grader, I represented my small Catholic school in the district competition but alas didn’t make it any farther than the written portion of that contest. It was truly an honor just to participate and I am just blown away by the words these kids are given now.
Good luck and job well done to ALL the participants!
