Celebrating Birthdays of Favorite Authors
Nov 30th, 2006 by lvbirders
Last night to celebrate the birthday of Louisa May Alcott (Nov 29,1832) we watched the movie, “Little Women”. Her books were favorites of mine when I was younger and the movie was so enjoyable. I cry EVERY time at Beth’s death and last night was no exception. Josh said the movie was “ok” lol. I was just glad he even watched as he wasn’t too keen on the idea to begin with.
Today is the birthday of another of my girlhood favorite authors, Lucy Maud Montgomery, 1874. I checked out the Anne of Green Gables Videos from our library to watch. I am hoping to tempt Josh with it because of the beautiful Canadian footage, even though he considers this series one of those “girly” ones lol. I really dont’ like to think of books as “boys or girls” so I like for him to at least be exposed to these in some way. This was a favorite show of mine when it was on Disney years ago and I am looking forward to seeing it again.
One that I know he will enjoy is the birthday of Mark Twain on this day in 1835. Sometime during the day we will be watching the video “Mark Twain Tonight!” starring Hal Holbrook. I had been hoping to get the Ken Burn’s documentary but couldn’t find it at the library. I was lucky enough to get this instead.
Such a fun way to celebrate the writers whose books we so treasure.

I love this idea! I think this would be especially interesting if we included a partial bio project as well. I know we read Alcott and Hawthorne, and then planned a trip to Concord, MA to see the places they lived, which helps the kids really feel the author. We hope that when my duaghter is a senior, Prince Edward Island will be one of our destinations!
