Bruegel’s “The Numbering of Bethlehem”
Nov 30th, 2006 by lvbirders
This term, per Ambleside Online, Josh and I are studying Pieter Bruegel the Elder, a Flemish painter in the 1500s, and are really enjoying his paintings. I was hoping to find something of his, Christmas/Advent related, and upon searching was not disappointed when coming upon his painting, “The Numbering of Bethlehem”.
I also found this article which turned out to be a sermon used for the first Sunday of Advent a few years ago. The minister uses Bruegel’s painting as one of his references. In reading the sermon it seems he even brought in an actual reproduction to church which his family had hanging in their home. Josh loved this!
I liked the painting so much I decided to use it as our blog’s header picture. We also added the picture to our wall gallery and have been enjoying it since!

Thank you for sharing this! :-)
