Immersed in History
Nov 9th, 2006 by lvbirders
In the midst of “life happening”, we have been using a much more unschooling approach. In doing this Joshua has taken a new path of interest.
Just after it came out we went to see the movie, Flyboys. That was just the beginning of a new passion. Since seeing the movie, he has immersed himself in anything and everything related to World War I. After seeing the movie he began research on the Lafayette Escadrilles. Then I happened to mention how much I loved the book All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque. He read it in a matter of a few days because he couldn’t put it down. He has been watching every show he can find on the History and Military channels. One such program led him to begin the book it was based on, The First World War by Hew Strachan. A little difficult to read but well worth it he says. These are adult books. Joshua is 12 but a very high level reader. We have had tremendous discussions on what he is learning and he is teaching me more than a few new things about “The Great War” as he prefers to call it. We have combed the library, both the adult and children’s sections, for anything we can find.
This post on a favorite blog of mine, Seasonal Soundings, led us to enjoy this wonderful BBC program that we were able to obtain from our library and yes World War I played a part in it:

It never ceases to amaze me, this wonderful journey of homeschooling, which allows for a new path to be followed with such passion.

Oh my gosh! I remember this series! I went through a Delderfield phase in either high school or college. Is the book by Delderfield? Anyway, wow, now I have another mini-series to look forward too! Thanks so much for reminding me of this!
Blessings,
Faith
So glad to see you guys back in the swing of things. This looks very interesting. Superboy has been expressing an interest in Civil War era history ever since we visited Fort Macon last month. But we are going to take a step back and start with colonial times soon.
Have fun!
Wow! I love his dedication to this topic. My daughter is getting absorbed in WWII right now.
Faith, Yes the series is based on the Delderfield book. They say it stays very close to the book. We had a great time watching it.
Theresa, It has been fun to see Josh delve into this subject. He is talking now of learning more in detail about the Napoleonic Wars as we have watched more than a few things with Waterloo lately. He is talking about wanting to become an historian now :) Tell Sam history of any time period is great!
Steph, WWII is so interesting too! My daughter and I did an in depth study when she was younger and we were blessed to meet and hear speak Ela Stein Weissberger, a woman who was in Terezin concentration camp and performed in the opera, Brundibar there. Such great historical fiction books covering this time period also.
