Week 3 - Weekly Enrichment Wall
Jun 21st, 2006 by lvbirders
Sorry about getting this up so late. More than a few things going on around the house. Maybe that’s why this week’s enrichment items seem so sparce to me lol. Ah well even if we just learn one thing that’s good then. Also, I wanted to thank everyone for their kind comments concerning the wall. Everyone seems to be adapting it to their own family’s way of doing things and that’s just how it should be. See what you started with your “fridge schooling” Faith :)

Latin - Cemel Dosce - “know thyself” -this seems to keep popping up everywhere for me- think I’m being told something lol
French - We were missing our French as my oldest has been crazy at work so I have taken it upon myself and chosen… Que sera, sera - whatever will be, will be
For those old enough to remember (like me) this is an old Doris Day song from the Hitchcock movie she did with Jimmy Stewart, The Man Who Knew Too Much. There is some disagreement as to this phrase being French, Spanish, Italian and even German. Josh just asked to watch this as we really enjoyed watching Hitchcock’s, Rear Window. See the possible connections that occur when you stay open to them :)
German - I had to laugh as I looked at my paper for what German quote my oldest had picked. It fits right in after the French I just typed.
Ich freue mich schon darauf. - I am looking forward to it already.
Quote - “Do not speak - unless it improves on silence.” Buddhist saying. (courtesy of my oldest son)
Root Word - Sun
- Latin - sol, sola solar,solarium
- Greek - heli heliantrope, helianthus, heliograph
Grammar Rule - Using Negatives
Spelling Rule - Scroll down to Rule #4 here. How to add suffix/verb ending when word ends in y.
Word of the Week - We have two because both boys wanted to pick. More connections it seems.
eradicate: verb - pull up by the roots; destroy totally; eradicate
armistice: noun - a temporary suspension of hostilities; truce
Poet/Poem - The Summer Sun by Robert Louis Stevenson
The site where I found this poem is also great for ideas for celebrating the summer solstice which is our current events and science topics for this week.
Composer - Antonio Vilvaldi 1678 - 1741 The Four Seasons - Summer
Artist/Painting - Henry O Tanner June 21 African American Realist painter (1859-1937) Painting - The Banjo Lesson
History - Junteenth Day - June 19
Current Events - Summer Solstice Seasons quiz
Science - Summer Solstice
Math - Eratosthenes Estimated the Earth’s Measurements June 19 240 BC

This is great! Don’t apologize about the late posting…I am just amazed that you are still finding the energy to do anything “school-ish” at all in late June!
Your site is beautiful. I’ve visiting fellow AO/HEO Bloggers and stop by here for the first time in awhile. Looks very good. Have an awesome week.
;D
You have such a lovely blog, barb!
I’ll be back.
blessings,
linda
PS Thanks for your prayers for my husband.
Do you have a post that explains more closely your enrichment wall? Either here on your blog or else in on of the various AO/CM type email lists??? i’d love to find out more about it.
I love this idea! What a great way to do some learning. I am going to see if I can find a way to do this. I just thought of a door that I could use. Ohhh I am getting those wheels turning. Thanks.
I can’t wait to come back and see what you have next!
