Our New Birding Blog
May 17th, 2006 by lvbirders
I have decided that our birding adventures and tales are entitled to their own blog. It seems we always have so much birding going on but not enough sharing the tales of unfortunately. I am hoping this will give me that extra little incentive. Be sure to check us out here:

I like the new blog, great pics!
I tried to post the following comment on your birding site, but the site won’t allow me to. Could it be a spam filter issue?
“I’m curious about the golf course you mentioned. Do they grass and water it? Or do they seek a more environmentally correect route through xeriscape or such?”
Ed
Thanks Ed. Glad you like the new blog. I forgot to set the blog to allow comments from anyone. Think that may have been the reason you couldn’t comment. I have changed it. Hope that helps.
About the golf course. It is grass and yes they are watered. They have some kind of filtering with the runoff water or something that they use to help cut down on the amount. My husband can explain it much better than I can. I’ll have to ask him tonight after he gets home from his seminar. It is amazing to me how many golf courses we really do have here…golfing is HUGE here and the greens are the same as other places even though we are a desert in our 6th or 7th year of drought I think. The things they do here NEVER cease to amaze me. :(
From your note, it sounds to me like they are probably using treated effluent water to irrigate the courses. Makes sense, and depending on which method or methods they use to treat the water, can be a very environmentally positive thing to do. The effluent is generated by the residents, drought or no drought, so might as well put it to a good use!

Ed, I talked to Steve and he explained that they build these courses with drains under them that collect the water used for the grass. The water is then recyled into ponds that are scattered around the golf courses and the cycle continues. The water generated by the residents etc is actually channelled into our Las Vegas wash system ( GREAT birding along it by the way) and then out to Lake Mead which is the water source for this area. Since we have been in a drought for the last 6-7 years (although the last few years have not been quite so bad) there are various things they have set in place to try and help ie watering restrictions, no new fountains being built (the fountain that is in the shopping center right up the street from where I live imports their water from somewhere else each week),and cash and refund incentives for desert landscaping just to name a few.
