A Wise Young Man

“A wise man will know what game to play today, and play it.”
Henry David Thoreau
Wandering around the internet this evening and reflecting back over our day, I came across a passage in this journal entry of Henry David Thoreau posted on a wonderful blog aptly named, The Blog of Henry David Thoreau. This blog posts journal entries for each day from Thoreau’s actual journals.
This passage spoke to me because in the morning as I was trying to “plan” our studies for the day, I happened to show Joshua this amazing post of beautiful nature journal drawings on Theresa’s blog, Lapaz Farm.
Excitedly and in total awe of the talent of Theresa and her son, Josh asked if we could purchase some new journals ourselves and take them up to the park.
My plans for the day were being made for me. Within 30 minutes we were headed up to the park with our new journals and no sooner had we entered the park when we had our first sighting of the season of two beautiful hooded orioles with their vibrant yellow contrasting with their deep black markings.
Josh and I as “observers of nature”, “improved this season” by the mere act of sitting and watching in awe of these magnificent birds.
Thank goodness for the wisdom of a son who knew what game to play today and for encouraging his mom “to play it”.

What a wonderful day! I’m glad you two decided to renew your nature journaling. It is so relaxing for us. And thanks a bunch for the heads up on the Thoreau blog. I had no idea! I love it! That quote sounds like an advertisement for unschooling to me! Frustrating because I think we are about to give up on our unschooling experiment, but I just KNOW it theoretically COULD work…and now I have Thoreau haunting me about it! LOL!
That is an awesome picture! What did you use to take it?
Ed,
I did not shoot this picture personally. I have put a link to the origin of the picture. It is very beautiful and gives some idea of the birds my son and I were able to observe. The gentleman whose picture it is has some very amazing pictures. Make sure to check them out. I enjoyed reading your own blog and especially liked the Jack London quote.
Hey, did you know that Ed is my husband? Hi sweetie!
Hi Sweetie!
(That is for Theresa, not Barb).
Barb, Thanks for the link, that website has some very nice pics.
We hope to someday be able to meet your family, you guys sound like a great bunch.
Ed
Ed, We too would love to meet you and yours. I keep telling Theresa I am going to steal away in your suitcases when you go to Alaska. :) I would love to visit your farm someday as I would finally get to see my birthplace state (I was born in Elizabeth City, NC but we moved when I was very young and I have never been back.)I’m really enjoying your own pics on your blog.
